Give your child the gift of confidence, discipline, and resilience. Our kids Jiu-Jitsu program in Mississauga is designed specifically for children ages 3 to 8, teaching them life skills through movement, play, and age-appropriate martial arts training.
More than a martial art. A foundation for life.
Parents often wonder what the right age is to start martial arts. The answer is younger than most people think. Children as young as 3 can begin learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a structured, age-appropriate environment. At Current Jiu Jitsu, our kids program is not about fighting. It is about teaching children how to use their bodies with control, how to focus when things get challenging, and how to treat others with respect.
BJJ is uniquely suited for young children because it does not involve striking. There is no punching or kicking. Instead, children learn grappling techniques that emphasize body awareness, balance, and coordination. These skills translate directly into better performance in other sports and physical activities. More importantly, they give children the physical literacy to navigate the world with confidence.
One of the most powerful benefits of Jiu-Jitsu for kids is its impact on bullying. Children who train BJJ learn how to control a situation without throwing a punch. They develop the confidence to stand up for themselves and others, and they gain the self-assurance that comes from knowing they can protect themselves if they ever need to. This quiet confidence often means they never have to use their skills at all, because bullies tend to leave confident kids alone.
Our classes are designed to be fun. We understand that 3 to 8 year olds learn best through games, challenges, and positive reinforcement. Every session includes movement-based games that teach BJJ principles without the children even realizing they are learning. As they progress, the techniques become more specific, but the fun never stops. Our goal is to build a love for the sport that lasts a lifetime.
Every class presents small challenges that your child learns to overcome. Mastering a new technique, earning a stripe on their belt, or successfully completing a drill builds genuine self-confidence that carries into school and daily life.
BJJ teaches children how to control a confrontation without punching or kicking. They learn to protect themselves calmly and effectively, which gives them the courage to stand up when it matters and the wisdom to walk away when they can.
In an age of screens and sedentary habits, BJJ gets kids moving in ways that develop strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. The training is disguised as play, so your child stays active without even realizing they are exercising.
BJJ requires listening, following instructions, and practicing patience. Children learn to wait their turn, respect their training partners, and focus their attention. These habits improve behavior at home and performance at school.
Children arrive, remove their shoes, and line up on the mat in belt order. This simple routine teaches structure and respect. The instructor greets each child and sets the tone for a focused but fun session. Parents are welcome to watch from the viewing area.
Every class starts with movement games designed to develop coordination, agility, and BJJ-specific motor skills. Tag games, animal walks (bear crawls, crab walks, frog jumps), and obstacle courses keep children engaged while building the movement patterns they need for Jiu-Jitsu techniques.
The instructor demonstrates 1 to 2 age-appropriate techniques using simple language and visual cues. Children then practice with a partner under close supervision. Techniques are broken into small steps and repeated until the movements feel natural. Positive reinforcement is constant throughout this portion.
Class ends with structured games that incorporate the techniques learned that day. For older children (ages 6 to 8), light positional sparring is introduced gradually. The emphasis is always on control, not aggression. Children learn that the goal of Jiu-Jitsu is to control a situation, not to hurt anyone.
Our kids program is divided into age-appropriate groups to ensure every child trains with peers at a similar developmental stage. Classes for ages 3 to 4, 5 to 6, and 6 to 8 run throughout the week, giving families flexible scheduling options. Each group follows its own curriculum that matches the physical and cognitive abilities of that age range.
Children progress through a belt system with stripes that recognize effort and skill development. Belt promotions happen regularly and are celebrated as a team, giving children milestones to work toward and a sense of accomplishment when they achieve them.

The kids program at Current Jiu Jitsu is led by Austin Brown, a Brown Belt and co-founder of the academy. Austin has been building the kids team since 2021 with a singular vision: to create a program that develops future leaders. His approach combines technical instruction with character building, teaching children to lead with confidence, strong morals, and an unbreakable mindset.
Assisting Austin is Nicholas Schembri, a Blue Belt who was the very first student to enroll in the kids program and the first to earn a blue belt at Current BJJ. Nicholas specializes in teaching children ages 5 to 10 and is dedicated to making sure every new student feels welcomed and comfortable.
All instruction at Current Jiu Jitsu flows from the direct lineage of Robson Moura, an 8x World Champion and IBJJF Hall of Famer, through Head Professor Toma Dragicevic (3rd Degree Black Belt). Your child is learning techniques refined at the highest levels of competition, adapted for young learners.

What parents want to know before enrolling their child in Jiu-Jitsu.
We accept children as young as 3 years old. Our youngest age group (3 to 4) focuses on movement skills, listening, and following instructions through play-based activities. Children at this age are not expected to perform complex techniques. They are building the motor skills and social skills that will support their Jiu-Jitsu development as they grow.
Safety is fundamental to everything we do. Our kids classes are closely supervised with age-appropriate partner work. There is no striking in BJJ, and children learn to control their movements from the very beginning. Minor bumps and tumbles happen in any physical activity, but our training environment is designed to minimize risk while maximizing learning.
The opposite is usually true. BJJ teaches children control, patience, and respect for others. Children who train regularly tend to become calmer and more disciplined because they have an outlet for their energy and they understand the responsibility that comes with martial arts knowledge. Our instructors consistently reinforce that Jiu-Jitsu is about self-defense and self-control, not aggression.
For their first class, your child can wear comfortable athletic clothing like a t-shirt and shorts. No shoes are worn on the mat. Once they decide to continue, a Gi (the traditional BJJ uniform) will be needed for regular classes. Our team can help you find the right size and recommend where to purchase one.
Yes, absolutely. We have a viewing area where parents can watch every class. We encourage parents to attend, especially during the first few sessions, so both you and your child feel comfortable with the environment and the coaching team.
