BJJ for Teens

The teenage years are full of change. Jiu-Jitsu gives your teen a healthy outlet for energy, a community of positive peers, and the mental toughness to handle whatever life throws at them. Our youth program in Mississauga is built for ages 9 to 15.

Why Jiu-Jitsu Matters for Teenagers

A sport that builds character when it matters most.

The teenage years bring pressure from every direction: academics, social dynamics, identity, and the constant pull of screens and social media. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers something rare in a teenager's life. It provides a physical challenge that demands full mental engagement, an environment where respect is non-negotiable, and a community where effort is valued over popularity. For teens in Mississauga looking for something more meaningful than a traditional sport, BJJ delivers on all fronts.

What makes Jiu-Jitsu different from team sports is the depth of individual growth it produces. In BJJ, you cannot hide behind a team. You face challenges on the mat that mirror the challenges of life, and you learn to problem-solve under pressure, to stay calm when things feel overwhelming, and to persist through difficulty. These are not abstract life lessons. They are practiced on the mat every single training session and carried directly into school, friendships, and future careers.

Bullying remains one of the biggest concerns for parents of teenagers. BJJ addresses this head-on. Teens who train develop a quiet confidence that discourages bullying in the first place. If a situation does escalate, they have the skills to control it without throwing punches. They learn that real strength is about restraint and composure, not aggression. This perspective shift is one of the most transformative aspects of training for young people.

Our youth program also provides something that teenagers desperately need: a positive peer group. The students who train together at Current Jiu Jitsu form bonds through shared challenge and mutual respect. They push each other to improve, celebrate each other's progress, and hold each other accountable. For many of our teen students, the academy becomes a second home and their training partners become lifelong friends.

Benefits for Your Teen

Mental Toughness

BJJ puts teens in controlled uncomfortable situations and teaches them to think clearly under pressure. This resilience carries over to exams, social challenges, and every difficult moment they will face growing up.

Positive Peer Group

Training partners become friends who share a common goal of improvement. The academy culture reinforces respect, discipline, and support, giving your teen a social circle built on positive values rather than peer pressure.

Athletic Development

BJJ develops full-body strength, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and coordination. It complements other sports and provides a year-round training option that keeps your teen physically active and progressing.

Goal Setting and Achievement

The belt system gives teenagers clear, measurable goals to work toward. Earning stripes and promotions teaches them that consistent effort produces results, a lesson that extends far beyond the mat.

What to Expect in Youth Classes

Structured Warm-Up

Classes begin with a dynamic warm-up that includes Jiu-Jitsu-specific movements like hip escapes, forward rolls, and partner drills. These movements build the athletic foundation that supports every technique. The warm-up also prepares the body for the physical demands of sparring later in the session.

Technical Instruction

The coach demonstrates 2 to 3 techniques from the curriculum, breaking them down step by step. Teens pair up and practice the techniques under supervision. Corrections are given individually, and students are encouraged to ask questions. The curriculum covers takedowns, guard work, passing, and submissions appropriate for their development level.

Live Sparring

Youth classes include supervised sparring rounds where teens apply their techniques against resisting partners. Sparring is closely monitored by coaches who ensure safety and appropriate intensity. This is where the real learning happens, as students discover which techniques work for their body type and style. Teens are matched with partners of similar size and skill level.

Competition Preparation (Optional)

For teens interested in competition, we offer additional training that focuses on tournament strategy, conditioning, and competitive situational drilling. Competition is never required, but many of our teen students discover a passion for it and find that the experience of competing accelerates their growth both on and off the mat.

Youth Program Details

The youth Jiu-Jitsu program at Current Jiu Jitsu serves students ages 9 to 15. Classes run multiple times per week with a curriculum that bridges the gap between our kids program and the adult classes. As teens develop their skills and physical maturity, they may be invited to join adult training sessions for additional mat time.

The belt progression follows IBJJF youth guidelines, with specific belts designed for younger practitioners. Promotions are based on technical knowledge, mat time, attitude, and demonstrated ability during sparring. We also recognize effort and character through stripe promotions that keep students motivated between belt levels.

View our class schedule for youth training times, or see our youth pricing options. We also offer family memberships for parents who want to train at the same time as their teen.

Coaching Your Teen Can Trust

Youth classes at Current Jiu Jitsu are guided by our full coaching team, led by Head Professor Toma Dragicevic, a 3rd Degree Black Belt under 8x World Champion Robson Moura. The youth curriculum is overseen by the same black belt instructors who teach our adult program, including Ryan Mech (1st Degree Black Belt, No Gi specialist) and Brendon May (1st Degree Black Belt, Gi specialist).

Our coaches understand the unique needs of teenagers. They know when to push and when to encourage, how to build confidence without creating arrogance, and how to foster a competitive spirit that stays healthy. Many of our instructors began training as young people themselves and bring that personal experience to their coaching.

Teen BJJ Questions

Answers for parents considering Jiu-Jitsu for their teenager.

Yes. BJJ is one of the safest martial arts because there is no striking. Teens train under close supervision with partners matched by size and skill level. Our coaches enforce strict safety protocols, and every student learns to tap out before any technique causes discomfort. Injuries are less common in BJJ than in many traditional team sports like football, hockey, or basketball.

Absolutely. Our youth program welcomes complete beginners. Many of our teen students had no martial arts experience before joining. The curriculum starts with fundamentals and builds progressively. Your teen will be paired with appropriate partners and given individual attention from the coaching staff to help them get up to speed.

Many parents report significant improvements in their teen's focus, discipline, and overall behavior after starting Jiu-Jitsu. The training requires deep concentration and teaches delayed gratification. These mental habits transfer directly to academic performance. The physical activity also helps teens manage stress and sleep better, which supports learning.

No. Competition is completely optional. Many of our teen students train purely for fitness, self-defense, and personal development. For those who are interested in competing, we provide additional preparation and support. But there is never any pressure to sign up for a tournament.
