BJJ for Families

The family that trains together stays together. Current Jiu Jitsu in Mississauga offers programs for every age group, from toddlers to adults, so your whole family can share the mat, build discipline, and grow through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Why Families Train Jiu-Jitsu Together

Shared challenges create unbreakable bonds.

Most family activities are passive. You sit in the same room, look at the same screen, and call it quality time. BJJ is different. When a parent and child both train Jiu-Jitsu, they share a language that does not exist anywhere else in their lives. They talk about techniques at the dinner table. They drill together at home. They celebrate each other's belt promotions and tournament wins. The mat becomes common ground where age, size, and authority do not matter in the same way they do outside the academy.

For parents, training alongside your children gives you a firsthand understanding of what they are going through. You are not watching from the bleachers. You are experiencing the same nervousness of your first sparring session, the same frustration of a technique that will not click, and the same pride of finally getting it right. That shared experience changes the way you communicate because you are not lecturing from the outside. You are in it together.

At Current Jiu Jitsu, we see this dynamic every day. Parents who started because they wanted their kids to learn self-defense end up falling in love with Jiu-Jitsu themselves. Kids who see their parents struggle and persist on the mat gain a new respect for what it means to be resilient. The result is a family culture built around effort, respect, and continuous improvement rather than passive entertainment.

What Family BJJ Looks Like

Programs for Every Age

Kids as young as 3, youth ages 6 and up, teens, and adults all have dedicated classes with age-appropriate curriculum. Your 3-year-old and your 35-year-old self both have a place on the mat. Everyone trains at their own level with coaches who specialize in their age group.

Aligned Schedules

Our class schedule is built with families in mind. Kids and adult classes often run back-to-back or in parallel time slots, so you can bring the whole family in one trip rather than juggling separate drop-off and pick-up times throughout the week.

Family Pricing

Training as a family should not mean paying as individuals. Current Jiu Jitsu offers family membership rates that provide significant savings when multiple family members are enrolled. The more family members who train, the more you save per person.

Shared Milestones

Belt promotions, tournament medals, and personal breakthroughs become family celebrations. When your child earns their first stripe and you earn yours the same month, you both understand exactly what it took. These shared victories create memories that last far longer than any trophy.

A Typical Family Training Day

Arrive Together

Families often arrive as a unit. While younger kids head to their class with dedicated kids coaches like Austin Brown and Nicholas Schembri, parents can watch, warm up for their own class, or catch up with other parents in the viewing area. For families with children in different age groups, the schedule allows stacking classes so everyone trains within the same block of time.

Train at Your Level

Each family member trains in their age-appropriate class with coaches who specialize in that group. Your 5-year-old is learning through play-based drills designed to develop coordination and confidence. Your teenager is working on takedowns and submissions in the youth program. You are drilling guard passes under a black belt instructor in the adult class. Everyone is challenged at their own level.

Talk About It on the Ride Home

The car ride home after training is where the magic happens. Your kids will tell you about the sweep they landed. You will tell them about the submission you almost finished. You will debate technique, share frustrations, and plan what to work on next. BJJ gives your family a shared vocabulary and a shared goal that extends beyond the walls of the academy.

Family Program Details

Current Jiu Jitsu serves families with children as young as 3 years old through our Little Warriors program, youth ages 6 and up, teens, and adults of all experience levels. Each program is structured independently with its own curriculum, but the values of respect, persistence, and technical growth are consistent across every class.

Coaches Who Understand Families

Our coaching team is not just experienced in Jiu-Jitsu. They understand the dynamics of training families. Austin Brown (Brown Belt), co-founder and Head Kids Instructor, built the children's program from the ground up and works closely with parents to ensure each child's development both on and off the mat. Nicholas Schembri (Blue Belt) specializes in the youngest age group, bringing patience and creativity to every class.

On the adult side, Head Professor Toma Dragicevic (3rd Degree Black Belt) and his team of black belt instructors provide the same level of technical depth to parents who are just starting their own Jiu-Jitsu journey. Several of our instructors are parents themselves and understand the time constraints and priorities that come with balancing family life and training.

Family BJJ Questions

Common questions from families considering Jiu-Jitsu together.

Our Little Warriors program accepts children as young as 3 years old. Classes for this age group are play-based and focus on developing coordination, listening skills, and basic movement patterns. It is a gentle introduction to Jiu-Jitsu that feels more like structured play than formal martial arts training.

Each age group trains separately in classes designed for their developmental stage and skill level. However, our schedule is structured so that kids and adult classes often run back-to-back, allowing families to train during the same visit. The whole family shares the experience of training even though each person is in their own class.

Family pricing provides significant per-person savings compared to individual memberships. The discount increases as more family members enroll. Visit our family pricing page for current rates and use the savings calculator to see exactly how much your household would pay.

Yes. Our free trial week is available to every family member individually. Everyone can attend classes in their respective age group for a full week at no cost. It is the best way to see if BJJ is the right fit for your entire family before committing to a membership.

That is completely fine. Individual memberships are available for any single family member, and you can always upgrade to a family plan later if others decide to join. There is no pressure for everyone to commit at once.
