BJJ for Adults

Whether you are 18 or 58, it is never too late to start training. Our adult Jiu-Jitsu program in Mississauga serves everyone from complete beginners to experienced grapplers, offering both Gi and No Gi training under direct black belt instruction.

Why Adults Choose Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

A lifelong practice that grows with you.

Most adults who walk through our doors are not looking to become professional fighters. They are looking for something that challenges them physically and mentally, that gives them a sense of progress, and that provides a community of like-minded people. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu delivers all of this and more. It is often described as "physical chess" because every roll on the mat is a problem-solving session where your body is both the puzzle and the tool.

One of the unique aspects of BJJ is that it can be practiced safely well into your 50s, 60s, and beyond. Unlike striking-based martial arts, there is no impact to the head. Training intensity is adjustable, and you can focus on technique over speed and power. Many of the most skilled practitioners in the world are in their 40s and 50s because Jiu-Jitsu rewards knowledge and timing over raw athleticism. The longer you train, the better you get.

At Current Jiu Jitsu, our adult program is divided into Gi and No Gi classes. Gi training develops a methodical, grip-based game that emphasizes precision and patience. No Gi training is faster-paced and translates directly to wrestling and self-defense scenarios. Most of our adult students train both styles to develop a complete grappling skill set. Whether you lean toward the traditional approach or the modern submission grappling style, we have classes that fit your goals.

The physical benefits are extensive. Regular BJJ training improves cardiovascular health, builds functional strength throughout the entire body, increases flexibility, and helps manage weight. But the benefits that our adult students value most are often the mental ones: stress relief, improved focus, better sleep, and the deep satisfaction of learning something genuinely difficult and seeing yourself improve over time.

What Our Adult Program Offers

Gi and No Gi Training

Choose the style that suits you or train both. Our Gi program develops precision grappling under head coach Brendon May. Our No Gi program, led by Ryan Mech, focuses on modern submission grappling with an emphasis on body locks and leg attacks.

Black Belt Instruction

Every adult class is taught by a black belt instructor. You are not learning from someone who read a book. You are learning from competitors and coaches who have spent decades on the mat and hold certifications from the IBJJF.

All Levels Welcome

Our classes accommodate everyone from day-one beginners to advanced competitors. The curriculum is structured so that beginners build fundamentals while experienced students refine their game. Separate beginner Gi classes are also available for brand-new students.

Competition and Sparring

Live sparring is a core part of adult training. Open mat sessions and dedicated sparring classes give you the chance to test your skills. For those interested in competition, our coaching team provides specific preparation and accompanies students to tournaments.

A Typical Adult Class

Warm-Up (10-15 minutes)

Classes start with a combination of general conditioning and Jiu-Jitsu-specific movement drills. Expect hip escapes, guard retention drills, takedown entries, and partner-based warm-ups. The warm-up serves double duty: preparing your body for training and reinforcing fundamental movements.

Technique (20-25 minutes)

The instructor presents 2 to 3 connected techniques from the curriculum. Each technique is demonstrated, explained, and then drilled with a partner. Coaches provide individual corrections as you practice. The techniques are sequenced logically: a guard pass might connect to a control position, which connects to a submission. This chain-based approach helps you understand how Jiu-Jitsu flows as a system.

Sparring (20-30 minutes)

The final portion of class is dedicated to live sparring, typically in 5 or 6 minute rounds with different partners. This is where theory becomes practice. You test what you have learned against a fully resisting partner. Coaches supervise all rounds and provide feedback. Newer students may start with positional sparring before moving to full rounds.

Adult Program Details

The adult program is open to anyone aged 16 and older. We offer beginner Gi, all-levels Gi, No Gi, competition training, and open mat sessions throughout the week. Most students train 2 to 4 times per week, though unlimited training is available with our membership options.

Belt progression follows IBJJF standards: white, blue, purple, brown, and black. Promotions are earned through demonstrated skill, consistent training, and character. Our academy has produced multiple competitive champions and we take pride in the quality of every belt we award.

Adult BJJ Questions

Answers for adults considering Jiu-Jitsu training.

We have students who started in their 40s and 50s and are thriving. BJJ is adaptable to your body and fitness level. Training intensity is always within your control, and the art rewards technique and knowledge over athleticism. The best time to start was 10 years ago. The second best time is today.

Both styles are valuable and they complement each other. Gi training builds a detailed, grip-based game and develops patience. No Gi training is faster and translates well to self-defense and wrestling. Most of our students train both. We recommend trying both styles during your free trial week and seeing which one resonates with you.

We recommend starting with 2 to 3 sessions per week. This gives your body time to adapt to the physical demands of training while maintaining enough frequency to build muscle memory. As your conditioning improves, many students increase to 4 or more sessions per week. Consistency matters more than intensity.

No. Sparring is introduced gradually. As a new student, you will start with technique drilling and positional exercises. When you feel ready, you can begin light sparring with experienced partners who know how to train safely. There is no pressure to spar until you are comfortable, and you can always sit out rounds if needed.
