You do not need to be strong to start. You will become strong because you started. Our women's BJJ program in Mississauga provides a safe, empowering space where women of all ages and fitness levels learn real self-defense skills while building unshakable confidence.
Strength, self-defense, and community built on the mat.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was originally designed to allow a smaller person to defend against a larger, stronger attacker. That foundational principle makes it one of the most effective and relevant martial arts for women. At Current Jiu Jitsu, our women's program teaches techniques that work regardless of size or strength, giving women practical skills they can use in real-world situations.
We understand that walking into a martial arts academy for the first time can feel intimidating, especially as a woman. That is why our program creates a training environment built on respect, patience, and encouragement. Every student at our academy, regardless of gender, follows a code of conduct that prioritizes safety and mutual respect. Many of our female students say that the initial nervousness disappears within minutes of their first class because the atmosphere is so welcoming.
Beyond self-defense, Jiu-Jitsu delivers a total-body workout that most traditional fitness routines cannot match. A single BJJ class engages every major muscle group while also challenging your cardiovascular system. You will build functional strength, improve flexibility, and develop core stability. Unlike repetitive gym workouts, every class is different because you are solving new problems with your body. This variety keeps training mentally engaging and prevents the boredom that causes most people to abandon their fitness routines.
The women who train at Current Jiu Jitsu often describe a transformation that goes beyond physical changes. They report feeling more confident walking alone at night, more assertive in professional settings, and more resilient when facing daily challenges. Jiu-Jitsu teaches you that you are capable of far more than you thought, and that lesson changes everything.
Our academy enforces strict codes of conduct. You control the pace of your training. Coaches monitor every session, and you will always be paired with respectful, appropriate training partners who prioritize your comfort and safety.
Every technique you learn has direct self-defense application. You will practice escaping common attack scenarios, controlling an aggressor from the ground, and creating distance to get to safety. These are not theoretical. You drill them until they become second nature.
BJJ is one of the most effective forms of exercise available. Each session burns significant calories while building lean muscle, improving flexibility, and boosting cardiovascular fitness. You get stronger every week without ever touching a weight machine.
The women at Current BJJ support each other on and off the mat. You will join a community of women who encourage each other's progress, celebrate achievements together, and form friendships that extend beyond the academy walls.
When you arrive for your first class, a coach or team member will greet you, show you around, and explain the training format. Wear comfortable athletic clothing such as a fitted t-shirt or rash guard and leggings or shorts. You do not need a Gi for your first session. Bring a water bottle and a hair tie if needed.
Every class begins with a warm-up that includes Jiu-Jitsu-specific movements. You will learn shrimping (a hip escape movement), bridging, and basic partner drills. These movements feel unfamiliar at first but quickly become natural. The warm-up is also where you start building the cardio base that supports the rest of training.
The instructor demonstrates techniques while explaining the concepts behind them. You then practice with a partner, drilling the movements repeatedly with coaching feedback. Techniques are taught in sequences that build on each other, so every class adds to your growing skill set. You will learn positions, escapes, sweeps, and submissions at a pace that matches your experience level.
New students are eased into sparring gradually. You may start with specific positional drills before progressing to full rounds. Sparring is where you test your techniques in a live but controlled setting. You always choose your intensity level, and you can tap out at any time. Many women find that sparring becomes their favorite part of training because it is where the puzzle-solving nature of Jiu-Jitsu truly comes alive.
The women's BJJ program at Current Jiu Jitsu is open to women aged 16 and older, regardless of fitness level or experience. Classes include both Gi and No Gi training, and women are welcome to attend any adult class on the schedule in addition to women's-specific sessions.
The curriculum covers the full range of Jiu-Jitsu techniques with particular emphasis on self-defense scenarios relevant to women. You will learn how to escape common holds, defend from the ground, and control an attacker until help arrives. Belt progression follows the standard BJJ path from white through black belt, with promotions based on knowledge, skill, and consistent training.

All classes at Current Jiu Jitsu are taught by experienced instructors who understand the specific needs and concerns of female students. His approach emphasizes technique over strength, making every lesson relevant and effective regardless of your size.
Our coaching team includes four black belts and additional experienced instructors who create an environment where women feel seen, heard, and supported. Common questions from women considering their first Jiu-Jitsu class.
Not at all. Jiu-Jitsu is specifically designed so that technique overcomes physical strength. Many of our female students started with no athletic background and now train multiple times per week. Your fitness will improve rapidly as you train. The best time to start is now, not after some imaginary fitness threshold.
We offer women's-specific class times where you train exclusively with other women. You are also welcome to attend co-ed adult classes if you choose. In co-ed classes, coaches are attentive to partner selection and ensure you are always paired with respectful, appropriate training partners. You are never forced into a situation that makes you uncomfortable.
BJJ is widely considered the most effective martial art for real-world self-defense, especially for women. Most physical confrontations end up on the ground, which is exactly where BJJ specializes. You will learn to control an attacker, escape bad positions, and create distance to get to safety. Because you practice against resisting partners, your techniques are tested and refined in realistic conditions.
Wear a fitted t-shirt or rash guard with leggings or athletic shorts. Avoid loose clothing with pockets, hoods, or zippers. No shoes are worn on the mat. Bring a water bottle and tie your hair back securely. You do not need to purchase a Gi until you decide to continue training.
You will be more than okay. Every woman in our program started exactly where you are now. Our coaches are patient and experienced at working with complete beginners. You set the pace, and no one will push you beyond what you are ready for. Most women tell us they wish they had started sooner.
